Along with the activity we had with design principles about typography, we were asked to collect items that could be used to make an experimental exhibition based on any of the 4 words we were given for design principles.

We had two ideas one for blitheful and the other for queer; we wanted to make a real life bridge which will be able to hold one person and swing around so that they feel that joy and then we thought of a box where the people would be able to touch and feel different sort of leaves together, dry leaves and green ones.

We started with the bridge since it was the most challenging one, our first idea was simply a reproduction and we realized that there will be too much implications and mostly to obtain the materials for this idea would be really tough. So, we removed a lot of elements from it focusing only on the experiment itself and we obtained a sort of skeletal map for it consisting of a pivot, a plank, supporters, in the form of wood rods, a handle and a stair. We tried to give it a shape but at the end we realized that there will still be too much implications in this idea, such as safety and the production itself which might be quite long and costly.

After some reflection and a tutorial, we finally decided to go towards the idea of the box for queer. However, we’ve been told that the idea was too dull that it lacks some consistency. So, after some discussion we’ve decided that since dry leaves rot and become minerals to the new born plant we’ll represent our elders who use to be given less importance but have a lot of knowledge for the new generations.

We’ve decided to change the shape of the box itself to give it more depth. We thought of a box made of two pieces, one with a rough texture and another with a shiny clean texture enveloping it. The inner part would represent the old people, since they use to have a rough character sometimes and the other piece has to envelop it since it represent how the modern age somehow dominate the old one. We had some ideas such as using a rope to represent the roughness of the box and a metallic texture to represent the modern age, which we’ve afterwards find some alternatives to it.

The final idea was a box with wood veneers to give it a rough texture to represent the old people enveloped with a shinny clean piece of card which represent the new generation inside which you’ll find green leaves on top of dry leaves. There was a hole cover with paper so that the viewer won’t be able to see it’s contents so as to intimidate him and with instructions given so as to earn the experience; to feel the content first, then to open the box where the viewer will find notes revealing our idea.

We wanted the whole experience itself to be conceptual. So we wanted the viewer to feel uncomfortable before he put his hands inside so as to represent how sometimes we might feel uncomfortable in the presence of our grand parents and then inside you’ll feel slightly more relieved to represent the relief that their support brought to you. Then opening the box you’ll see it visually by the green leaves over the dry ones, and we’ve even written it to make sure that the people get the right interpretation.
