We had little discussion on the text we had to read for Image Making, then we’ve been given a few examples from some Graphic Designers who use to do some hands-on works. We were asked to use their works as a reference for the coming activity.
For the activity we had to bring a few items, any time. We were asked to paint the item in any color, I had a ribbon, just a random ribbon. I painted it in brown.
Then we had to look for random headline either in a magazine or in a newspaper, I found the work ‘come to’ as a headline. The lecturer collected our headlines and randomly spread them around and I finally obtained the headline ‘Cask of Distinction’.
We also had to bring some colored paper in class and we were asked to make an arrangement of the colored paper with the item that we’ve painted and the headline that we’ve obtained and we actually had to relate the head line to the item.
After a…lot of reflection, I came out with this idea.
Since my object don’t have a proper shape, I thought of a concept to show that even the undefined does have an identity, for example, when we talk of some science specially those based on space there are many things that are unsure but still there are some theories that can possibly explain them such as the now famous black hole which are still a great mystery to mankind even now. Or simply the spiritual world and religious believes such as the different believes from alchemy that talks about how a man may ascend spiritual. It basically expresses all these abstract themes. Even the concept of a God above us all, a primordial shapeless entity that is unbound by space and time which even the priest from whatever religion can’t really explain properly.
I tried to reproduce the item in various different forms using different techniques with the question 'Can you still distinguish the item?' to represent how even tho it's drawn or painted in different technique, one can still recognize it from it's shape and color, therefore, even though it's an abstract it has an identity.
We also had to experiment with the camera to obtain the appropriate angle for the composition making. However, I feel that this image does not work as well as the first one.
Afterward we had to look for another headline but this time we had to write it on the object and I obtained ‘Communication and Creative Art’ from a school’s magazine which was relating to my abstract theme.
I wrote it and I tried to represent the same thing but more in the art side of things. To show how art is flexible and can be anything and it don’t have to have the shape of an object we use to know.
Again we were asked to experiment with the composition and did the following.
I also tried to play with the lighting, hiding the light from the papers we had, add the flashlight with some in some of the compositions to see the different effects I can obtain.
I also tried a few background to try to give it a better meaning such as these ones:
With this one I tried to show that art is somehow closer to the light so it has a sort of power to it.
And with this one I tried to show that people don't give art enough importance that's why it's in a dustbin.
I had a lot of chance to explore a lot of horizons during this class and I believe that this class have helped me to widen my perspective concerning my main brief.
