We had a homework to read a text by Mark Wigan called ‘Text and Image’ to learn different ways to create a composition with a strong concept behind it and make a mind map to represent our research work.
Here’s my mind map with a bit of the information I have collected.
From these I’ve learnt that creating a composition is so flexible that ever single shape, colors or even material that has been used in the composition is important to obtain the concept. For example, a hand drawn graphic or typography has its importance as well to create a more informal message which I believe will be mostly related towards youngsters but a digital design can be used to create a formal message mostly related towards professional businesses. But of course, depending on the situation the informal style of designs can be used for professional businesses as well.
I’ve also learnt that the actual trend could be used as a symbolism, I feel like this could be a great tool to sensitize people especially when it comes to relating to our flawful modern age, including element from the developing technology which sometimes has a negative impact on us even though it feels like an achievement and an advancement.
Moreover, I’ve learnt how we are free to use any sort of material in our design for a more physical outcome. Of course, there has to be a reason behind why we used this particular material and such. For example there was a project in the book which was made out of wood scrap with typography on it to sensitize people about deforestation.
I’d like to explore and experiment with typography and physical design more to have an idea how I can create a greater impact on people on people and create a more interactive piece of work. Works from Stefan Sagmeister would probably be of a great influence to me while exploring this area, since he is so eager to create what he use to call ‘an organic form of design’.
I feel like learning about the different uses of materials could be useful to my main brief since from the last tutorial I’ve decided to work on an installation and in additional, hand made works would probably be useful to me.
