So, for this work, i went on Google Images, looking for urban artist and this artist, Ian Fennelly had actually captures my attention.
First of all, my attention was drawn towards the appeal of the image, compare to other urban artist, his sketches were a lot more vibrant. Secondly, there are some odd colors in there, like for example the violet from the back of this image.
The way he uses these vibrant colors have intrigued me a lot, but then I found this image, where you'll that the buildings are somewhat distorted, and I've been wondering whether it was purposeful to represent like a darker aspect of this particular building.
So I began researching some information on this artist, in the hope of understanding his perspective hopefully.
I've finally found some articles where he himself explain his techniques and his visions. So Ian Fennelly is a Primary Art Consultant, he's constantly traveling, drawing the places he enjoys, doing workshops and demonstrations.
He explained how he love being in busy places, there's even a blog where he explained in detailed how he enjoy the human interaction with his environment. According to me he's a great observer, according to how he describe the people as they through a window and they walk, and I believe that's what causes his sketches to be so vibrant, it's because he enjoy the experience of being in a crowd.
He shared a few interesting points in these articles. Even though being a fine art student in the past, he admits that drawing humans is quite hard as they move a lot, so his solution was to, as he said in his own words: "I try and draw people without actually putting them in". He didn't precise how he actually do it, but I believe, that the colors again plays an important role here, according to the place that the majority of the people are focusing maybe.
He furthermore admits that it's hard to paint a busy area, but as a solution he suggest to use our imagination along with our observation skills, and I think that's another interesting point here as well, as this can help one to develop like a reconstruction skill, which might be helpful specially when designing a particular space. He also say that he move a lot while sketching, sometimes buying food, other time going to the restroom, So the analysis that i made about the dark brown building previously could actually be a mistake from his side as the angle changes, however it does create some sort of effect on the compositions.
He has also explained how he does his sketches. He mentioned that he begins with a quick wash, to get an idea of the proportions, generate the shape and furthermore add the emotions to his sketch. Then with a pen brush, he adds the depths and the tones in the composition. And finally, he uses liner marker to add more details and textures. He describe how this part of the processes forces one to identify the little details all around himself. The whole process usually take him 2 to 3 hours, so he really does dive into the unique details of the area he's studying.
He basically focuses on the environment and the particular atmosphere that he enjoy while being in a busy place.
