The video is basically about how to give design a better purpose. The speaker mentioned about the intentions, and how the consideration of side effects is an important aspect, because a design not well researched on can lead to other issues rather than solving them.

Here are the points with which I agreed:

Vision of good life, agree;

Every designs communicates what we want to communicate what values we want to attach to our design what message we have for people where we want to drive the focus of our audience this will help to bring knowledge to the people I believe that people are very unaware of many things bringing the right knowledge and the right values to them will help in education of course but also in revelations, like thing that are now known to be detrimental, habits the previous culture had which wasn’t healthy.0

Side Effects, agree;

Everything we do has a consequence, being aware and prepared about the bad consequence will allow room for improvement, especially if the initial idea is to be abandoned, like, in localizing a brand sometime it has to forsake it’s own identity to do better in a specific country like when Starbucks was selling tea in China instead of it’s well known coffee from America.

Virtues, agree;

I accept however a virtue is more worthwhile to explore since it delivers moral sense to the audience which might actually lead to a more prosperous society.

And here are the points with which I disagreed:

Intention, disagree;

Because intentions can never be always achieved perfectly and I believe that no matter what we do there will still be a downside to it, so perfectioning our intention won’t make things better. Maybe a better solution would be to accept failure from not being able to achieve the desired result but then with further study after the failure we improve. Focusing too much on the intentions might lead us to be stuck towards trying to achieve a design that won’t work

Values, disagree;

I believe that values will mostly make people want to focus on one point of things rather than seeing it as a whole and this might limit the design possibilities whereby more efficient concept can be achieve especially thinking of a business because their values might not always be a good value to explore and give to the people, like it may only express a value that is worth only to the business rather than to the people

For the values I had a dual perception.

The thing that I’d like to explore more from his speech is not really something he mentioned but more of my question from his point regarding the effect that a design has. He gave several examples on how the effect could lead to a degrading side effect, so my question is, how can we better identify the side effect and I believe that the answer to this one wouldn’t be straight forward and will actually require a lot of exploration since the side effect can be psychological, health related and morally degrading which might take a while to even perceive. Just like how he explored the concept of the old philosophers, I wonder if there any philosophy which serves as the key to find the side effects faster.
