We were given an article to read the 'CENTENNIAL CHROMAGRAPH DATA SPATIALIZATION AND COMPUTATIONAL CRAFT' from the 'California College of the Arts'.
They explained how they did their envisioned piece steps by steps. Starting with collecting the data from the school archives, making digital infographics/mockups to identify the capacity of information that can be represented and further analyze the data.
They then did a couple of 3D mockups both digitally and physically, using plastic tube, card board among others. They also explained how they needed a colorful element to represent the data. Therefore, coming up with the idea of using colored pencils with imprinted text of the school and courses. Choosing colored pencils was a more suitable choice since they can also distribute it as souvenirs as they mentioned.
They also discussed the fact that the piece was an architectural data piece and why it had to be this way, to represent the school and it's architectural courses. They further summarized their process into 4 steps, which are the data visualization through collection of data and computer aid, the tectonic development which relates to the aesthetic whereby they chose to work with pencils, the sculpting and refining process which is the construction of the curves and structures and lastly the modulation of the colors which will eventually represent the data.
