We've been given a sustainable design project where we have to come up with an idea that will be sustainable, which mean that it will be durable, it won't leave too much wastes and that it will not affect the nature.

Here's some of my research;

Having Waste material left due to the ineffectiveness of the process.

Janine Benyus during a TED Talk presentation

She talks about some Inspiration from by nature where no waste is made like for example;

1. Self Assembly from a shell, {research conducted by Jeff Brinker }

2. Biodegradable plastic out of CO2 {research conducted by Geoff Coates}

3. Quenching Thirst; inspired by some snails that can extract water our of the atmosphere. {research conducted by QinetiQ/Univ of Bath/Biomimicry Guid/Rocky Mountain Institute}

4. Extracting metals without mining with the help of a special Microbe {research conducted by MR3, California}

5. Timed Degradation whereby through organic means, we cause the desire item to breakdown in the desired time.

6. Drying blood for months, Preservation without cold with a typical bacteria and recover it through regeneration without losing any part of it {conducted by Biosignal Cambridge Biostability}

SOLUTION:

Since of course no design could actually make this happen, a proper solution to this could be to create a community website to discuss and get scientific people together to help evolving this technology through sharing ideas, opinions, facts and theories. The website will also help funding this cause through website activities available to all such as fun paid mini games, merch, and generous donations.

However since it all depends on since rather than on design, I don't really like this idea.

Plastic Bottles Pollution and Health Impact

This is yet another interesting concept that I found;

Over 90 pound of plastic waste is produced each year.

Marine lives and even the environment is being affected drastically and quickly.

We're quickly depleting our lands and might be left with none to burry the waste since plastic takes over 200years to start breakdown.

Plastic is a toxic material very harmful especially when it is in contact with heat.

Plastic has been found in human guts

It can create cancer and contributes to the creation of bacteria.

SOLUTION

To collaborate with a water company and create a whole system whereby reusable bottles will be sold and a water dispenser will help to encourage people to buy just the water instead of buying new water bottles everytime and the company will also benefit from a higher profit with both the reusable bottles and the water dispenser.

Use thermoset plastic which are non toxic and reusable

Use stainless steel which are non toxic, odor resistant and reusable

And a water dispenser belonging to the brand itself to encourage people to use their new reusable bottles and allow the company to make some profit by selling just the water.

Design a whole dispenser with the reusable water bottles made of stainless steel with a recyclable bin for those who want to get rid of their stainless steel bottle and buy a new one with also a poster glued on the machine which will sensitize people to stop using plastic bottle.

This is our final presentation with our combined research. Since we were limited on the time we couldn't include everything in it
