We had a real-life project for the international company ‘Sitecore’ where we had to design a welcome card for the new comers in the company to make them feel at their place in their arrival.
I did a few sketches of what it could be, I thought of a card in the form of a laptop which will also be like a book with the message written on each page, I’ve also designed a sort of smoky design as a cover. The idea was afterwards rejected since the smoke represent nothing and was their only for the aesthetic and have a welcome card in the form of a booklet will be quite a waste.
During the process I’ve also made a few sketches of anything relating to computer, wait if any of these could inspire me.
My second idea was based on some mechanism made out of paper but it was also rejected since the die cut for the mechanism would be quite costly.
My third idea was a card that can be also used as a pen holder, where there will be a simple message written on a wheel sandwiched between two other cards. So, one should actually turn the wheel around to read the message and finally there will be the holes for the pens. The card can also be fold so that it stands still on the paper.
The same idea has been developed by adding a triangular shape on top to represent ascension and a the graphic as well has been modified into the form of a hive to represent unity.
The forth idea that I had was a simple small card that can be glued unto a smart phone and be used as a stand for the phone while watching movies.
The same concept has been chosen at the end and I made 2 design and 3 mockups, I forgot to take a pic of the 2 mock ups and it went with the client but here is the ideas for the graphic on it and the design of the 2 other mockups, both actually have the same design, but different graphics and made out of different type of paper. A thin one which was not working properly and a really thick one which was good but maybe too thick to cut and print on, it was a 400g paper.
Here's the design of the other mockups
During the process I've also a failed mockup but it had actually helped me to understand better how to develop my idea.
Since the client seemed to be interested in these two mockups, I started developing this idea itself. He suggested to add a graphic of the computer’s command prompt and also a keyboard below the phone making it looks like a computer.
So I made 3 more mockups. One made out of thin card but sandwiched on top of a thick card. But the result turn out really spoiled and unprofessional since there was several cracks on it, the other was made out of thin art paper sandwiched on top of another thick card. I did each sides in a different way, one where I applied a glue all over the surface and it seemed to be really stretched and it was warping the paper on this side, the other side, I’ve applied the glue only at the edges, this time there was lot of air inside and it didn’t had a proper finish
At the end I end up printing it on a card that I found at a paper shop close by. I did the printing on both sides and even though it was not accurately in the middle it was quite good. However, the matt texture of the paper reduces the vibrancy of the graphics on the card.
I made a comparison of the mockups with the thick card and the thin one, and I found that even though the one with the thick card was spoiled it was more stable while holding the phone. So as a conclusion I would suggest an art card of about 350g to print the design on, on both sides to have the desired result.
