In the briefing we've learnt that there are different type of textures and each had a different effect, which triggers different senses in us. We've learnt about physical texture, visual texture and invented texture.
We are all exposed to physical texture all day long, visual texture is more toward the sight, like the different folds in a drapery. Lastly invented texture is obtained while repeating a pattern.
Then, activity time again. We had to walk around the campus to look for different textures, from all the 3 above and even sound textures and talk our emotions toward the observed texture.
Physical Textures
The first one is the visual texture of a wooden table, which was really pale and looks quite relaxing and peaceful.
The 2nd is the feel of rust which doesn't feel so good, since it's like tiny of thin and fine particles of dust, which leaves a kind of sliding powdery feel on your fingers but you can't see it.
The third one is the rubbery linear texture of a rubber pipe. I've tried to add the shinny appeal of it but since I didn't use a white paper and I made a quick shading on the spot, its not being seen well.
This is the really famous technique to capture texture, of rubbing a pencil over a piece of paper placed on the texture. I've record the texture on a metal chair, it gave me a quite enjoyable, playful feel as I rubbed my fingers over it, especially due to it's roughness.
The same technique was used to capture this texture. However, the effect was a more disturbing one, somewhat irritating, it reminds me a lot of the stresses I feel as a student, being shaken up and ending up in a mess, though by the physical feel, it felt really smooth and pleasant which was another interesting thing about it.
This was a little area of an old stone wall filled with holes. It reminded me of how weak a place or a person gets as time passes. A kind of unpleasant feeling.
Sound Textures
For this one I tried to express the feeling that I felt while listening to the sounds around the college. I tried to express it by giving it a texture using simply lines. Almost like the audio waves
The first one was students talking in chinese at school, I tried to create the waves from what I heard and to be honest, I haven't felt anything apart from a simple curiosity from this sample.
The next one is the sound of a crow... somewhat... Singing.. which actually doesn't sound that pleasant to most people since it sounds really raw and painful in a way. However I found a sort of rhythm in it, and also like what seems to be a note in its caws, which was interesting.
This was the sound of a rotating fan, you could hear the movement of it as it was swinging around that's why I did the curve in it. However, it was a kind of raw sound too, like there was a tik tak sound in it. This one sounded quite stressful to me since it keeps on repeating with only a few alterations
The last one was the sound of a woman walking with the dustbin's plastic in her hands, which again sounded like a music to my ears, since there was a rhythm in the sound as the plastic bag was stroking with her legs as she was walking, and of course it was kind of constant. So it felt like a beat made out of a crumbling sound.
