From the video, we’ve learned how the things we learned are censored, like we are never being told the truth about what’s exactly going on in life. We’ve also learned a bit of the political backgrounds, like how the government support this harsh and extreme lifestyle just to keep the economy of the country up.
In fact, they don’t even consider the health of the earth and the people, either foreign or local just to keep the producing more and more products. About 4lbs of pollution is estimated to be produced from the industrial estates of the US, of which mostly is consist of dioxin, a very harmful gas for humans.
Design is playing a great role in this overly consumer centered world. By making every product look more beautiful and sophisticated than the other and by creating new designs which required modern spare parts to be repaired and therefore one should get rid of his old items even more quickly.
There much more stated in the video such as how this lifestyle exploit people giving them no choice to adopt and unhealthy and toxic lifestyle and also more details about media, how media creates the trend and sort of force one to get conform to the trend and become a ‘heavy consumer’.
Design contributes to this chaotic life we’re living in, but it could also be the solution, if we simple make, ‘durable’ designs, for example, an electronic appliance that uses the particular slot for a it’s components for, let’s say, over 10 years, and encourage other brands to use this exact slot for their devices, so that the same spare part can be used in each of them and if the item got broken after a year or 2, we can simply repair it and use it.
Moreover, this information could be use to create an experimental map or whatever to expose this truth to the public and create an awareness. A voice can bring many more together and that’s the moment that the bigger corporation would get involved and a change will be on it’s way.
But going back to the easier solutions, the 3 Rs (recycle, Reuse and Reduce) could also be use, for the recycling part we could have some designs which are really convenient to recycle, like products made entirely of a particular material so that they are more convenient to recycle, and proper designs should be applied to each items depending on the method they go through to be recycled.
