We had an activity where we had to observe, interpret, evaluate and finally come up with theories. So, D.I.E.T actually stands for Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Theorize.

So, we’ve been asked to analyze an image, just talking about the visual details of it, then we were told to interpret it, to give it a story or several possible stories. Of course, we had to evaluate these interpretations and finally we came up with a theory.

For the first image I saw;

Therefor I had interpreted the following;

I’ve evaluated it referring from these aspects;

And I finally conclude that;

For the second image, I saw;

Therefor I had interpreted the following;

and I've evaluated it;

And I concluded;

The next work was actually a home work where we've been given an illustration and we've been asked to apply the same things that we've learnt.

Visual Analysis

The image represents an old fat black man with a brass instrument, held by his left hand and placed at his eyes instead of at his mouth. He is sitting on an old wooden chair in a really smoothening manner with his right eye closed and his straw hat placed on the ground. He got a blanket on him. The grass is of a vibrant green, the whole image is really vibrant, with a clear night-time-blue sky filled with stars and a few big balls, of what seems to be planets. From the orifice of his brass instrument there is a crescent ball shape. The old man doesn’t have much hairs and the few hairs he has are all white. There is a really light blue color behind the old man which gives a sort of light effect from the man’s silhouette.

Interpretations

I. The old man is an old cosmic observer, great and old entity from beyond man’s imagination. From the comfort of his sanctuary he watches what goes on, on all the planets.

II. The old man is an old, mighty cosmic entity who devours each and every planets, for this instance of the scenery he is devouring the moon, symbolism of healing, therefor no man will be resilient ever again and darkness shall rule over the universe ever after, the very end of all lives.

III. The old man represents God, a creator of planets, the brass instrument is actually to represent his creativity to create planets, his eyes is looking through the instrument to show that he sees all, He is old to represent his wisdom and he’s fat to represent how much knowledge he has. The crescent ball at the orifice of the instrument is actually a planet that is being formed.

IV. The old man is a simple man, who wanted to look at the stars to feed his imagination and his joy. That’s why he is depicted in such a simple manner, he has the color of a black man, to represent his low standard in life, his straw hat furthermore expresses this. He is using the brass instrument to look at the star, this represents how he is cut from the civilization. However, the vibrant colors express his happiness, how comfortable he is in his own skin, the planet are being sucked in his instrument, this is to represent how he is feeding his creativity.

V. The old man is really old, he is getting himself ready for a travel from which he will never come back again, death. And he is peaceful about the thought of joining the stars and leave the world. That’s why he is observing the sky and try to find that special place where he will land in the ether.

Evaluation

I. He is old, one could say that he is observing as well, he seems to be comfortable, this could explain the sanctuary part. However, "a mighty shade need not a blanket for thy warmth and comfort". So, this doesn’t explain the image well enough.

II. Every part in this interpretation is fine, the old man is fat which defines how he consumes a lot of planets, but he doesn’t seem to be an aggressive and the image is too vibrant and peaceful to represent this dark imagery.

III. This interpretation is really accurate with an explanation for each part of the image. On the other hand, representing God as a being made of flesh is actually really degrading, God should be represented as an entity made of light or something like this.

IV. This one explains most elements in the scenery, it’s still full of fantasy and out of the realism, even though it’s interpretation can be generalized and applied on the real life. The fact that he is a black man can also be related to the apartheid that was going on in African countries from 1948 to the 1990’s, where the black people were considered as the inferiors.

V. This interpretation in slightly similar to the previous one, it is related to the real world even though the image itself is a supernatural on, however there’s no element that does represent death anywhere in there.

Theory

The image depicts that there’s no simplicity, within this image of a homely old man, who went outside to stare at the dark sky of infinite stars and planets of all sizes, while allowing his old but passionate mind being inspired and being mesmerized by the mysterious dark but marvelous expanse that covers his whole environment. Though he is one of the forsaken, one of those who hadn’t had the chance to pursue in the world of knowledge and wisdom, he still has his own passion and a creative mind. A part of knowledge can be obtained through observations and experience, one does not have to be a successful student to be considered as an intelligent person. That’s is why there is no simplicity in the men. The image of the outcast is just a creation of the materialistic, career-centered and greedy world of today.
