So we had a group work to research on the advertising industry during the 80’s to the 90’s, so each of us did a personal research, and we compiled all together, here’s the simplified version of my research, and I’ll explain it in more detail in the presentation slides;
This is our slides and it’s a compilation of all the various research work of each of us;
Here’s the first slide and it talk about how, it was a peaceful era during that time the war was over, and everything was going fine.
There were the rich people who called themselves Yuppies, it was sort of their symbol.
People became more self centered and materialistic, that’s the time where this culture had started.
They began spending a lot of money as well but still were not happy.
From this slide you will notice that the women are the most targeted ones.
Most of the graduates during that period were women, and there were a lot of working women too, that’s why they were the targeted ones, and they were the main source of income.
They also had a lot of emphasis on clothing during that time, like a way of allowing people to express themselves and everyone tend to wear bright and colorful clothes to show their wealth and standard.
They liked to have a variety of the stuffs they had as well, not just a single one of them.
Just like their clothing, they did colorful posters to represent the flourishing age they were living.
The invention of the cable allowed people a new horizon to explore to promote the products.
MTV was about to be shut down, but they did a video where youngsters were asking for their MTV channel back and that’s how they were saved.
They tend to be persuasive and at times attacking in their ads.
These are some examples of how they were attacking their competitors.
On the left it’s the campaign by Ronald Reagan, who won the election for the second time with this ad displaying a happy and peaceful world, where people are all happy. He also promote and increased the accessibility of media, claiming that he want to be watched by many people.
On the right, it’s not a TV ad, but it was a campaign to warn people about the dangers of ages, there were some famous magazines who were supporting them too by promoting the use of condom.
The VCR was invented and people were able to record their shows and movies and fast forward through the many ads, there were more advance VCR that allowed people to automatically record just their programs with no ads in between.
So the advertisers took a new approach calling some celebrities on the plateau.
They also invented the Home Shopping Network where new products will be tested and people will be able to buy instantly by calling a number.
The businesses were also benefiting from a higher profit in this manner.
